Andrew Glassner is a consultant based in in Vancouver, Canada, where he advises companies on computer graphics, artificial intelligence, quantum computing, narrative, and storytelling.

Andrew has carried out research at the NYIT Computer Graphics Lab, Case Western Reserve University, the IBM TJ Watson Research Lab, the Delft University of Technology, Bell Communications Research, Xerox PARC, Microsoft Research, and Wētā FX. He has served as Papers Chair of the SIGGRAPH ’94 Papers Committee, Founding Editor of the Journal of Computer Graphics Techniques, and Editor-in-Chief of ACM Transactions on Graphics.

Glassner is a prolific writer. In addition to many research papers, he edited the book An Introduction to Ray Tracing and created and edited the Graphics Gems series. His other books include Processing for Visual Artists, Interactive Storytelling, and the college textbook Principles of Digital Image Synthesis. The three books in the Andrew Glassner’s Notebook series collect and update almost 10 years of regular columns in IEEE Computer Graphics & Applications. His book Deep Learning: A Visual Approach presents the algorithms of artificial intelligence in depth, but without math. Andrew’s most recent book is Quantum Computing: From Concepts to Code, designed to help people new to field embrace and use this exciting new approach to computation.

Glassner is also a writer and director of live action and animation. He wrote and directed the short animated film Chicken Crossing, which premiered at the SIGGRAPH ’96 Electronic Theatre and has been shown worldwide. He designed the highly participatory Internet game Dead Air for The Microsoft Network, where he wrote and directed the live action pilot episode. He wrote and directed several internal videos at Microsoft using a variety of animation techniques. He has written feature-length and short screenplays, children’s books, and three novels.

Glassner is the sole or contributing author to 7 patents, and appears in the onscreen credits for Avatar: The Way of Water and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (IMDb).

Andrew is a popular speaker, frequently invited to give keynotes and guest lectures to both technical and popular audiences. When the subject matter is technical, he is known for his ability to present complex information in accessible and enjoyable ways. He speaks on computer graphics, the uses and social implications of AI, the techniques and promise of quantum computing, and both traditional and modern approaches to storytelling.

Glassner holds a PhD in Computer Science from UNC Chapel Hill. In his spare time, Andrew paints, plays jazz piano, and hikes.
